CELEBRATE THE CHINESE NEW YEAR AT THE WORLD MESEUM


On February 10, 2024, according to the Chinese calendar, Chinese New Year begins: the year of the dragon. This animal symbolizes strength and courage. In cooperation with RCNY, Space101 and Lili Zhou, the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam is organizing a special on Chinese New Year on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 February 2024.

In heaven, Long, the Chinese dragon, reigns supreme. Sometimes he appears as a brush stroke in the sky. Sometimes he slides across the earth like a shadow. The Chinese dragon cannot do without his pearl. He once sneezed it out. H-ha-achie. The dragon's breath released by that sneeze contracted into a flaming pearl. From that moment on, life force was born on earth with heavenly energy flowing through everything and everyone in China: qi (pronounced: chie). At the Wereldmuseum Atelier, follow artist Hoi-Shan Mak's workshop. She will teach you to draw the most beautiful dragon. And of course it can't be done without a shiny pearl!

Short tour along Chinese objects in the exhibition Kruispunt Rotterdam
Our museum guide takes you along a number of Chinese objects on display in the exhibition Kruispunt Rotterdam. The tour takes you along wood carving art, made in so-called Treaty Ports such as Shanghai. Ports that were the only ones that allowed foreign visitors. The wood carvings were taken by travelers as souvenirs. Hear more about the connection between the twin cities of Rotterdam and Shanghai. What significance does China have for the port of Rotterdam? Also check out the batik sarungs decorated with Chinese lucky motifs or the Qipao, also known as the "Shanghai Dress. This type of dress is known worldwide as "Chinese dress. The dress has played a major role in the imagination of China since the 1920s.

Chinese New Year will also be celebrated on Superstreet with three workshops at Winston's Festival Kitchen. In this celebration, the color red is important because it symbolizes happiness. And this year extra special because the Year of the Dragon has begun. The artists Lili Zhou and Sofie Xie are waiting for you in Superstraat. Inde party kitchen you can go for various creative activities to teach you more about Chinese culture. Print your own dragon with special stamps on Chinese rice paper. Or cut a dancing dragon and calligraphy the character 'luck' and 'dragon'.

China has the largest population in the world: 1.4 billion people. Of those 1.4 billion people, 900 million speak Mandarin. If you speak English and Mandarin, you can talk to more than half the world's population. Good reason to learn Chinese: useful for young, but also for old. Learning Chinese seems difficult, but is it? During the afternoon you will learn more about the Chinese language. By the end of the class you will already be able to speak, write and understand a few words of Chinese. Chinese for children focuses on Mandarin.

Behind-the-scenes look at the making of an upcoming exhibition on manufacturing culture in China
The makers of the Made in China exhibition, which opens in October 2024, give you a behind-the-scenes look. In November 2023, they took a research trip through China, traveling from Beijing via Jingdezhen to Shanghai and finally to Hong Kong. Along the way, they met extraordinary makers and artists. During this lecture, they will tell about these encounters and you will hear stories about masterpieces from the World Museum's collection that are sure to be featured in the exhibition.
